When I pick up my camera, I get such a rush; a rush of emotions, a rush of energy and a rush of excitement. Nothing can compare to the feelings I have when I get to capture two people in love. There’s nothing quite like it. However, as much as I LOVE photographing couples and learning new tips and tricks on my equipment, that actually isn’t my favorite part of this little business of mine.
Whenever creatives are asked about what their favorite parts of their businesses are, so many of them say that it’s their relationships with their clients. When I first started out, I didn’t quite understand that. Not necessarily because I didn’t believe that it was possible, but rather I hadn’t yet experienced that for myself. I would consider myself a people person, but more of an “extroverted introvert.” I am re-energized by being by myself, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, growing up, I always wanted to be the popular girl with all the friends, the girl who was outgoing and made everyone laugh. The only thing was that I was often too shy to speak up in front of people and I never considered myself to have a sense of humor. I grew up with this picture of what I wanted to be, and what I thought was going to allow me to “make it” in this world, but was never able to really come out of my shell to fulfill that… until I started my photography business. Friends, this gig of mine has been a game changer. And I don’t say that lightly!!
When I have a couple in front of my lens, I am outgoing, I am funny, I am energetic and extroverted. I have so much fun getting to know them, posing them, cracking jokes and creating a joyful experience for them. During consultations, I am beaming with joy because I get to tell people how much I LOVE this little business of mine and get excited with them for their wedding day. I love coming alongside my couples and helping to plan their day so it is flawless. By the time their wedding day comes along, I am almost just as excited as they are!! When I am with my couples, I have the opportunity to be the person I’ve always wanted to be: the truest version of myself. I’m the person that I’ve always strived to be but never thought I’d get there. And the best part? It comes naturally!! I don’t need to put on a mask, or drain my energy to put on a show for my clients. My behavior and service for my clients freely flows from my heart; it isn’t forced into a mold that doesn’t fit.
As much as I love taking pictures, blogging and marketing, interacting with my clients is without a doubt, my favorite part of this business. And if that’s cliche, then #sorrynotsorry. 😉
With joy,
Kelsie
