One of the most common questions I get before a senior session is, “What should I wear?” Choosing the perfect outfit can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are my best tips for putting together outfits that will make you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to shine.
1. Start with what you love.
Think about your favorite pieces in your closet, the ones that make you feel amazing. If you never wear dresses but think you should for photos, skip them. Confidence photographs better than any trendy outfit ever could.
2. Choose colors that complement your skin tone.
Soft neutrals, pastels, earth tones, and muted colors photograph beautifully. Bold colors can work too, especially if they align with your style. Avoid neon or extremely bright shades that can reflect onto your skin in photos.
3. Add layers and textures.
Layers add interest and depth to photos. A denim jacket, cardigan, or flannel can be styled different ways within your session. Textures like lace, knits, or embroidery photograph beautifully and add visual dimension without being overwhelming.
4. Don’t forget accessories.
Simple jewelry, hats, or scarves can enhance your look and create variety in your gallery. Just avoid anything too trendy or distracting. The goal is for you to stand out, not your giant earrings.
5. Plan for movement.
Flowy dresses or skirts photograph so well, adding natural movement and softness to your portraits. If you prefer jeans or pants, make sure you can comfortably sit, stand, and move in them.
6. Bring options.
I always recommend bringing 2-3 outfits to your session. This allows us to create different looks, capture your personality fully, and gives you backup choices in case something doesn’t feel right when you arrive.
Above all, remember: your senior session is about showcasing who you are. Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident, and your photos will reflect that beautifully for years to come.
